Luxuriant country estates
In the Golden Age, Dutch economy reached a peak. To escape the foul stench of the city in the summer, rich Amsterdam merchants invested in luxurious country estates with park-like gardens in the forested inner dunes. Thanks to a system of barge-canals and rivers, you could travel from Amsterdam to Haarlem in just a few hours. Kennemerland thus became the cradle of these country estates, each with its own unique style.
A Fairy-tale Atmosphere
A belt of nine of these country estates, including Elswout, Duin & Kruidberg, constitute the park’s eastern border. Take a walk along orangeries, majestic ponds and statue gardens and experience the atmosphere of outdoor living in the Golden Age.
Flowers and Plants
You will find special trees and plants, such as the centaury and ‘stinsen plants’, that are characteristic to this area and bloom lavishly in spring. It is also the habitat of numerous bird species, including the nuthatch. Former estate ice cellars are now inhabited by several bat colonies. In autumn, the park is brimming with mushrooms in all colours and sizes.
